Summarized bitumen emulsion introduction
High expense operating and maintenance of warm asphalt factories and it's detriment on living environment form one side plus limitation on distribution and warm asphalt transportation are the most reasons to forbid the warm asphalt consumption worldwide as for the time being, bitumen emulsion (bitumen with None-Kerosene solvent) and cold asphalt are considered.
Nowdays, some main factors in regard to quality of asphalt are noticed:
  1. Capability on far distance displacement.
  2. Possibility on usage of thin layer asphalt.
  3. Asphalt speading speed especially in big cities and residential complexes which has caused obstruction on projects implementation.
  4. Cheap and reasonable finished price.
  5. Lack of confliction with the human health and living environment parameters.
  6. Main factory operational speeding and possibility of supprting the executing workshops.
  7. Required machinery easy maintenance and operation.
  8. Suitable for any kind of surface covering asphalt (street, Highways, plane landing field).
Nowaday, most of countries have selected bitumen emulsion in their road construction policy as headline of their activities wheras going to be gathered toward substituting cold asphalt instead of warm one.
This production basically get used as per to following ways:
  • Stoney road asphalt (new asphalt)
  • Covering asphalt (old asphalt rehabilitation).
  • Stabilising of versatile sand
  • Recycling asphalt.
  • The main material of bitumen emulsion consists of: emulsifier, water, bitumen, few percentage of addetives like kerosene and cloridric acid.
The emulsifier is a chemical material which gets applied in bitumen emulsion production line as an addetive. This material has composision nature with bitumen meanwhile, provides possibility for bitumen to get mixed temporary with water from production stage up to spreading stage and asphalt layer formation and water evapuration.
The main production line that provides facility for water and chemical addetives to mix either automatical or manual with bitumen, can be fitted in 1X20' container. The bitumen gets stored in tanks adjecent to factory which after production will be stored in emulsion tanks or could be drained to tanker in order to get moved to the site.
The process can get automatically or manually implemented with defaulted mixiting plan which the output then gets pumped to tanks. The required land for factory establishment is min. 7000 Sq. m and the production capacity in one working shift will be 48000tons per annum.
The other advatage of the factory is enabling the bitumen emulsion to be kept at least for 4 next months in tank whereas covers all problems and limitation in which were used to raise on transportation of warm asphalt.
The considrable point is the amount of emulsifier that is going to be mixed with the bitumen which depends upon the type of emulsifier for Products like PRIMAKT.
This compound is approved by afiliatted sources in Iran like ASPHALT AND BITUMEN ASSOCIATION. It’s relation to raw material importation will be too low whereas reduces approximately less than 1% per ton on emulsion production .
Production in brief
Bitumen is the most basic raw material in road construction industry which is used to be used for providing asphalt compounds, securing asphalts, tak coat and prime coat, leakage isolator cracks filller and etc… using stoney material. To access the bitumen has to be liquidised within any of 3 following methods:
Bitumen heating.
At this methodthe bitumen turns into liquid by heating effect which them mixex with other material .this method is an old method not in use any more
Using kerosene solvent
On this option, solvents like petrol, petroleum and gasolene will be added in an amount of 30 – 40 percent to provide fast (RC), tardy (MC) and slow (SC) hardening. Nowadays stated option are used to produce coating and cold asphalt.
Usage of water as solvent
For different reasons like pullotion hazardous and costy on price, while usage of petroleum solvants, most of the countries are preferred to use bitumen emulsion or soluble bitumen in water.
This manner is in use at nnew factory and it's technology gets supported by some Swedish companies like AkzoNobel or Denimo Tech.
Emulsion production process
The Bitumen emulsion can be achieved from granuled bitumen to be dipped in water.
At this way, the bitumen which is an un-soluble petroleum material in water gets pupmed to powerful milling machine after getting heated. At the same time, the hot water gets injected to the tank. The small bitumen particular dips into tank and turns to granule.
To prevent granules NOT to stick to eachother after switching the mixer down, a soapy material called emulsifier within the amount of 12-3 liter per ton pending on type of the product as CRS or SRC will be added to bitumen causing the granuled bitumen surface to get polorized and rebuff eachother.
Hence while usage of bitumen emulsion and immediately after mixing of bitumen emulsion with stoney material on spreading on surface of roads the emulsifier losses it's effectivness causing the bitumen to stick to stoney material to provide bitumen coating meanwhile the water gets evapurated. The different types of bitumen emulsion fall into break through any one of fast (RC), tardy (MC) and slow (SC) breakage depending upon breakage time.
The Bitumen emulsion production has an out put capacity of from 5 to 40 ton per hour depending upon customer application .
The mentioned equipment are produced in 2 type as In-Line & Batch for customers.
